It went from people commenting on La Gifle to speculation as to what Will Smith's punishment would be. There were straight-face comments, jokes, memes, newspaper articles. It only fell out of the news once the Academy had announced he would be suspended for these ten years.
Quick fact check for Thomas: maybe I misheard what he said but 1000 is approximately the number of total people (of all races) shot by police in a year. The number of unarmed men is much lower, somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 or so.
