“I’m from a heavily-religious area (the Tidewater region of Virginia). From my perspective, the trappings of wokeness are instantly-recognizable as the trappings of religiosity.”
Seconded. I was born and raised (but no longer am) Mormon, and it’s bananas to me that people can’t see that [whatever is acceptable to call 2020s Wokeness] is just another fundamentalist religion.
John McWhorter does an excellent job explaining it. But, for those of us who lived it, it’s nearly self-evident.
I dunno I mean Jars of Clay and dry humping were often the gateway to Radiohead and wet humping, so. I have confidence the woke comedians of today will lead youths to the truly hard stuff, like Jim Gaffigan.
MC Skat Kat was actually Paula Abdul's thing, but such points of fact don't matter to Twitter mobs, so it completely tracks that they would boycott the animated feline in an attempt to get at Janet Jackson.
Wow, the comparison of the woke to a religion is right on.
I also agree with the NYT letter that shows the cancel culture crowd is actually delaying the acceptance of their ideas rather than fostering that acceptance.
I'm not certain. Christian rock is a parallel culture that grew up over time, serving a niche market of kids who wanted decent-sounding music that their parents wouldn't throw away. Don't know if "liberal" comedy is the same, but then I came of age in the 00s, when Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, and the like were totally *owning* Bush et al.

And of course, now the Religious Left is banning the Religious Right because the Religious Left doesn't know...Monty Python?!?

It's just...all turning to sand all around us, isn't it?
