The summer 2020 protests were an attempt to "gaslight" the Right? I propose that we declare a moratorium on the word "gaslight" as it no longer seems to mean anything.

It’s perhaps also worth noting that so many of the people who latch on to this stuff are part of a religious movement that’s losing its steam. As evangelical social morality from a hundred years ago can’t hold up to pressure of, say, your boisterous cousin being open about who he is and the family continuing to love him anyway, they need some other way of feeling control over their life narratives.

I have similar feelings about 1/6. Trump & co.'s legal maneuvers are concerning, but the mob was just a bunch of dipshits and sad sacks who never had a prayer of overturning anything.

I don't think Tucker's counterparts at MSNBC are doing our side any favors by acting like it was 9-11. Almost one year later (Jesus, that's the first time I did the math... eleven months of this...) they continue to cover 1/6 multiple times per week. Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes put developments like "a new subpoena" in their A-blocks.

It has reached the point where I groan aloud when they say "January 6th." I don't want to hear about it anymore. If there is a genuine development in the investigation, put it in the D-block or something. It doesn't warrant an entire year of primetime coverage. Countries that have actual violent coup attempts probably don't talk about it as much as we talk about that dumb day.

> "I’m sad that people are so devoid of meaning in their lives that they delude themselves into thinking that they’re important players in some big, historical moment."

I've developed natural defenses to any 1/6 related news so I have no opinions on that topic, but this line is spot on (about so many things).

> Keeping perspective defangs Carlson’s narrative. I, for one, will continue to make brave forays to the grocery store and post office without fear that I’ll be accosted by a white supremacist or Antifa mob. I know that’s lame; it makes my life seem boring and unimportant. I could certainly make things more exciting by deluding myself into thinking that there’s a deep state conspiracy out to get me. Unfortunately — and this really is unfortunate, because I have 28 days of my Fox Nation subscription left — I just can’t get myself to believe that shit.

The real problems remain the same as they ever were. Without morally excusing them for their repugnant actions, I'd bet money that Antifa, the Proud Boys, Boogaloo Boys, and all those other LARPers left and right COMBINED destroy orders of magnitude fewer lives per year than, say, our utterly broken health care industry.

But you can punch a Proud Boy or an Antifa member, and that makes people feel powerful. Health care industry execs have gated communities and security guards.

Well I'm glad you watched it so the rest of us don't need to.

If I was a betting man, and I am, I would put money on three years from now the "New War on Terror" bit won't have aged as badly as the rest surely will. I doubt he put it succinctly, but I'm guessing instances of white-supremacist-domestic-terrorism will stay pretty flat, while the budgets allocated to three letter agencies to fight it will sky rocket. Like, no one thinks these massive organizations dedicated to terrorism are just going to disband right? I think Tucker is inadvertently helping them turn Jan 6 into the much needed new WMD.

OT - I can't believe the mens' soccer team will have to play Canada on January 30th, possibly in Yellow Knife in pitch (heh) darkness.

Gosh, I haven't seen Jonah Goldberg's name in a couple of decades. As I recall, back then cheeky bloggers were calling him The Doughy Pantload.
