For Valentine's Day, I Have Decided to Rip the 1999 Rom Com "Simply Irresistible" a New Asshole
Strap in, love birds
25 years ago this very night, 20th Century Fox released the romantic comedy Simply Irresistible. It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and is about a struggling chef who meets the man of her dreams with the help of a magical crab. I’m going to type that again: It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and is about a struggling chef who meets the man of her dreams with the help of a magical crab. It has a very generous 16 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
I hope my review of this cinematic masterpiece is the Valentine’s Day content you were looking for.
The film takes place in New York, as required by the Romantic Comedy Location Act of 1994. Sarah Michelle Gellar plays Amanda, an unlucky-in-love chef who is struggling to run a restaurant, possibly because she is a child. Gellar was 20 or 21 during filming, and also convincingly playing a teenager on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Apparently, the script was written for Holly Hunter, who said “no”, or more likely “fuck no”. The studio — which also produced Buffy — pushed for Gellar in order to raise her profile. The film simply blows by the fact that Gellar is too young to run a restaurant or possibly even to obtain a liquor license.
